Muhammad was Extremely Merciful and Generous | Orientalist Gustav Weil

Gustav Weil (1808 – 1889) was a German orientalist. One of the great works of Weil was Mohammed, der Prophet (1843), a life of Mohammed in the compilation of which he was the first to go back to the oldest accessible sources in Europe.

It should be made clear that Gustav Weil falls fairly short in ascertaining the beauty of language, diction and understanding the chronological order of revelation of Quran and the divine wisdom behind a different order of compilation of Quran.

He even falls short in understanding the nature and impact of divine revelation upon Muhammad and has even made gross errors in comprehending the station of Prophethood.

Even then he cannot stop himself from praising the most beautiful character of Prophet Muhammad.

Dr. Gustav Weil in his book ‘History of the Islamic Peoples‘ said:

Muhammad was a shining example to his people. His character was pure and stainless.

His house, his dress, his food –they were characterized by a rare simplicity.

So unpretentious was he that he would receive from his companions no special mark of reverence, nor would he accept any service from his slave which he could do for himself.

Often and often indeed was he seen in the market purchasing provisions; often and often was he seen mending his clothes in his room, or milking a goat in his courtyard.

He was accessible to all at all times.

He visited the sick and was full of sympathy for all.

Unlimited was his benevolence and generosity as also was his anxious care for the welfare of the community.

Despite innumerable presents which from all quarters unceasingly poured in for him; despite rich booty which streamed in—he left very little behind, and even that be regarded as State property.

After his death his property passed to the State and not to Fatima, his only daughter, the wife of Ali.”
